How to get voters back
The APPG for Fair Elections was proud to co-host this event with IPPR and Lodestone Communications on Wednesday 4 June.
Across the Western world democracies are realigning. In the UK, voters are turning away from the mainstream, turnout is declining, and political inequality is sharply rising. These trends are the manifestation of deeply held political grievances. There is a growing sense that the system is rigged – and that democratic solutions cannot deliver. Politicians and defenders of democracy can no longer afford to ignore this.
MPs and leading experts came together for a discussion about, ‘How to win voters back’, considering practical solutions to modernise elections, what’s at stake, and how MPs can help shape future legislation.
Ellie Chowns MP (APPG Vice Chair) and Chris Curtis MP (APPG member) argued that Automatic Voter Registration is a necessary but not sufficient step towards winning back the confidence of voters. In addition, we need a modern, proportional voting system that makes every vote count equally.
