Record public support for electoral reform

60% of voters now support electoral reform, according this year’s British Attitudes Survey, the highest level of support since records began. Just 36% of people believe we should keep the current system.

The new report, published today by Professor John Curtice and the National Centre for Social Research has found the a majority of supporters of all political parties support the abolition of First Past the Post. Those with low levels of trust and confidence in government are more likely to support electoral reform, the study revealed.

Welcoming the news, Alex Sobel MP, Chair of the APPG for Fair Elections, said: “These figures show that the British public has had enough of First Past the Post. There is now unprecedented support for a fairer voting system right across the political spectrum – and there are more MPs in Parliament who support this change than ever before. The Government should set up a National Commission for Electoral Reform to examine the options and start building consensus on a way forward.”

Ellie Chowns MP, Vice Chair of the APPG for Fair Elections, said: “A massive 60% of the public now want to scrap the First Past the Post voting system – with change backed by a majority of supporters of every party. Britain is a multi-party democracy – and people expect a fair system which they can trust to reflect their votes. The Government should set up a National Commission for Electoral Reform – to take a proper look at the issues, seek the views of the public and experts, and find a fair, representative way forward.”
